For the first time in Melbourne Cup history, the iconic 24 carat gold trophy is due to visit the Wellington region on 28 August as part of its international tour.
Since this famous event began, the Lexus Melbourne Cup has travelled more than 600,000 kilometres in 16 years and visited more than 450 destinations. The 17th Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour began in Hobart on 3 July and is now travelling the world in the lead up to the 2019 Melbourne Cup. The cup is set to visit only three New Zealand locations; Matamata, Wellington and Otago. The Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce has been selected to host the evening event for the Wellington region.
The Lexus Melbourne Cup will spend one full day touring the Hutt Valley, culminating with the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce’s After 5 cocktail event.
CEO of The Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce, Helen Down is delighted to celebrate the arrival of the cup on behalf of the Wellington region. “The Melbourne Cup is an iconic, historic event and we are thrilled to be selected to host the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour. This is Wellington’s opportunity to see the real thing, touch the iconic cup and be part of the excitement in the lead up to this famous sporting event. Meet the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour Party, a Melbourne Cup jockey, one of our own New Zealand sporting icons and selected New Zealand dignitaries on the night. It is also a fabulous opportunity to showcase our region to the rest of the world.”
The cocktail function will take place at the Lower Hutt Events Centre on 29 August and is open to all members of the public. Further information and tickets are available from the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce website, at www.hutt-chamber.org.nz.
After a whirlwind tour of New Zealand, the iconic cup will next depart for Singapore, Japan, China and the United Kingdom. This year’s tour will last five months and take in 39 destinations worldwide.
The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour is sponsored by Lexus and supported by National Australia Bank, ABC Bullion and TAB. The cocktail event is hosted by the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Upper Hutt City Council, Hutt City Council, and the Wellington Racing Club.
